North American manufacturing is under attack.  Entire categories of goods are no longer made in this country and manufacturers are extremely hesitant to expand or locate facilities in this country.  All of us know just how damaging the recession has been.  Add to that the negative impact of proposed taxes and health care requirements, climate change regulations, new labor laws, China’s continuing mercantilist policies, accounting strictures and the like, and we all face a long, difficult period in the months and years ahead.

Rather than watch our customer base erode further, the Central States Chapter of the Metals Service Center Institute (MSCI) will be holding a town hall meeting to mobilize, educate and confront the issues.  The town hall meeting will be on Monday, April 19th at 3:00 p.m. at Drury Lane, located at 100 Drury Lane in Oak Brook Terrace, IL.

The speakers will cover:

  • The impact of mercantilist trade practices and currency manipulation;
  • Labor issues and the impact of health care legislation;
  • Tax, financial and other issues that impact decisions to invest in domestic manufacturing; and
  • How all these factors impact the manufacturing environment.

M. Robert Weidner, III, president and CEO of MSCI will moderate a rich line-up of speakers, including:

  • Bill Jones, vice chairman, O'Neal Industries and chairman, Metals Service Center Institute, will deliver opening comments.

  • Bill Hickey, president, Lapham-Hickey Steel Corporation

    Lapham-Hickey Steel is a steel service center founded in 1926.  This family owned and operated company has seven locations with approximately 500 employees.  Bill has been employed by Lapham-Hickey since 1975 and has been president since 1980.

    Bill has been active in the MSCI - holding chapter and national leadership positions.  He is also    active in the Illinois Manufacturer’s Association and is currently a member of the Executive Committee.  Bill holds an appointed position on the Dept. of Commerce ITAC 12 Committee.

  • Jim Miller, partner, Winston and Strawn, Washington, D.C.

    Jim is particularly experienced in tax, health care, and energy matters, which he combines with a litigator’s background to effectively, represent a wide spectrum of clients before the U.S. Congress and executive branch departments and agencies. In his practice, he regularly enlists the substantive strengths of the firm, both in policy areas and in areas such as litigation.

  • Kevin M. Dempsey, senior vice president, public policy and General Counsel AISI

    Kevin Dempsey leads the AISI public policy team representing the interests of North American steel producers and serves as Chief Legal Officer to the Institute.  Before joining AISI, he was a partner at Dewey & LeBoeuf, a global law firm, and its predecessor Dewey Ballantine LLP.  While in private practice, Dempsey litigated numerous international trade cases on behalf of U.S. steel producers and other U.S. industries before the U.S. International Trade Commission, the U.S. Department of Commerce, and the U.S. courts.

We will be inviting political candidates and incumbents to participate in the meeting. We also have developed letters you can use to easily invite your representatives, senators and local politicians.

This event is open to employees of all MSCI member companies, their customers and any other individuals or groups concerned about the future of manufacturing. We expect the meeting to last for 1½ to 2 hours, with a question-and-comment session at the end for the audience. The evening will conclude with a reception with hors d'oeuvres and an open bar.

Please plan to attend and so you can do your part to help rebuild a thriving manufacturing environment for us, our customers and our country’s future.
