Metals Activity Report December Results
U.S. service center shipments of both steel and aluminum were higher in December 2014 than in the prior year. Year-to-date U.S. steel shipments were higher than 2013 by 4.2% while year-to-date U.S. aluminum shipments were up 8.1% year over year. Canadian results for December 2014 and for the year were similar.
U.S. Service Center Activity
In December 2014, U.S. service center steel shipments increased by 6.3% from December 2013.
Steel product inventories increased 18.3% from December a year ago. At the current shipping rate, this represents an increase of 11.3% from a year ago.
In December, U.S. service center shipments of aluminum products increased by 11.8% from the same month in 2013.
Inventories of aluminum products increased 8.0% from December a year ago. At the current shipping rate, this represents a decrease of 3.4% from a year ago.
Canadian Service Center Activity
In December 2014, Canadian service center shipments of steel products increased by 7.5% from December 2013.
Steel product inventories increased 21.4% from December a year ago. At the current shipping rate, this represents an increase of 13.0% from a year ago.
In December, Canadian service center aluminum shipments increased 18.2% from the same month in 2013.
Inventories of aluminum products increased 12.2% from December a year ago. At the current shipping rate, this represents a decrease of 5.1% from a year ago.
