Conference Registration
Complete the registration form and mail or fax it, along with your remittance or credit card information, to MSCI.  Register early and save $200. Your registration fee covers lunch and dinner on Wednesday on and breakfast, lunch and dinner on Thursday and refreshments. You will also receive a link to be allowed access to presentations from the meeting – an invaluable resource.

What to Wear
Conference attire is business casual. This includes khaki slacks and polo type shirts for the men; slacks, skirts, polo-type shirts or blouses and sweaters for the women. Remember meeting room temperatures and personal comfort zones vary widely. It is recommended that you bring a sweater or jacket to the sessions. While planning your wardrobe, please remember that Indianapolis' average high and low temperatures in September are 73ºF high and 51ºF low.

Please note: It is recommended that you make your hotel accommodations early to ascertain availability. MSCI cannot guarantee availability or the room rate after Friday, July 28th, or when the MSCI room block is filled—whichever occurs first.

All reservation requests must be accompanied by a first night room deposit, or guaranteed with one of the following major credit cards: American Express, Diners Club, Carte Blanche, Visa, MasterCard or Discover Card. Deposits will be refundable only if the reservation is cancelled at least 48 hours prior to arrival time.

Hotel check-in time is 4:00 pm and check-out time is 11:00 am. While the hotel will attempt to accommodate early check-in and late departures, it cannot be guaranteed, but instead depends upon hotel occupancy.

Keynote Speakers

Fred Rine

Fred Rine, M.S., CSP, is a nationally recognized leader in workplace safety who designs programs that get results. Fred created an Attitude-Based Safety Culture Training program that has been attended by more than 500,000 people and has contributed to significant improvements in workplace safety at companies all around the country. Fred created one of the most well-regarded workplace safety programs in the country during his career at FedEx. The program continued under his leadership until he left to join the National Safety Council as vice president. He launched FDRsafety in 1996.

Fred is a past member of the prestigious National Advisory Committee on Occupational Safety and Health (NACOSH), a 12-person committee of workplace safety leaders that advises the Secretaries of Labor and Health and Human Services on occupational safety and health programs. He is also a former board member of both the National Safety Council and the American Society of Safety Engineers Foundation. He earned a B.S. in business administration and an M.S. in safety management from West Virginia University and is a Certified Safety Professional.

Jeff Skiles

Jeff Skiles, the co-pilot of U.S. Airways Flight 1549, "The Miracle on the Hudson", is an experienced pilot with over 21,000 hours logged in the sky. With a great sense of humor and natural story-telling ability Jeff takes audiences into the cockpit during one of the most extraordinary emergency landings in aviation history and shares the importance of adaptability and working calming through crisis.

Jim Spigener

Jim Spigener, senior vice president at DEKRA Insight, is a seasoned executive coach who helps senior leaders in companies worldwide demonstrably improve their individual impact on organizational safety. He’s coached more than 50 C-suite executives from Fortune 500 companies, developing their leadership skills and working with them to create custom strategies for safety excellence and culture change.


Among his notable successes, Jim trained and coached one global manufacturing company’s top 300 executives. His work helped their executive teams develop strategies that made a step change in safety performance and developed a high-performing culture. The result was a significant drop in fatalities and recordable lost-time injuries.


In addition to working with client leadership, Jim is active in the development of BST seminars including “Leading with Safety,” “Enhancing Supervisor Effectiveness in Safety,” and many others. He has authored texts, as well as articles that have been published in a variety of industry and trade journals.


Prior to joining BST, Jim worked as superintendent of fire, security, and safety for a Fortune 500 chemical firm where he developed, implemented, and coordinated its behavior-based safety process. Additionally, Jim developed operator and supervisory training programs, and was the company’s internal organizational development resource for self-directed work teams He is a former steward of the United Steelworkers of America.

Breakout Session Speakers

Robert Browne

Robert Browne is safety director for NLMK, USA, with facilities located in Pennsylvania and Indiana.  NLMK is a prime supplier of hot rolled, hot rolled pickled and oiled, hot rolled coiled plate and carbon/alloy specialty products.

Robert began his safety career in 1985 as a shift safety coordinator and has worked in the metals industry since 1994 holding various safety positions. The past three years he has been with NLMK as the director of safety .

Christine Clearwater

Christine Clearwater is president of Drug-Free Solutions Group, LLC (DSG), a risk management-loss control consulting firm she established in 2000 and is a prominent national speaker.  DSG offers drug-free workplace programs, including client policy sculpting, supervisor training, employee education, and assessment and coordination of drug/alcohol testing and employee assistance programs. In over 20 years, Christine has served as a consultant to more than 1,000 clients in a multitude of industries operating in all 50 states, Canada and Mexico.

From 1992-2000, Christine was vice president and director of RSA Consulting Services, a division of Employee Information Services (EI) and the leading consulting firm in the country for substance abuse prevention in the workplace.

Before joining EI, she operated her own firm for six years, and was nationally for creating and implementing a state-of-the-art community-based substance abuse prevention Center for businesses.  In addition, Christine spent eight years as division director at the Center for Advanced Engineering at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.

She presents to business groups nationally and internationally and is an approved speaker for the International Society of Human Resources, as well as approved speaker & preferred service provider for: National Safety Council; Captive Resources; The Addis Group; BB&T. CompTia; Arthur J. Gallagher, Artex Risk Solutions, and numerous business associations.

Shmuel Cohen

Shmuel Cohen, is the director of Environmental Health and Safety for Steel Warehouse, and holds a Master’s of Science in Occupational Health and Safety.   Shmuel’s primary responsibilities and focus include safety, environmental compliance and risk/exposure management.   During his 15+ years associated with Steel Warehouse he has served in various roles within the company, primarily focused on either human resources, personal development and EHS, designing programs to promote employee safety awareness while reducing OSHA recordables and the Workman’s Compensation foot print. 

Shmuel has worked to shift employee mindset from a “have to” safety mentality to a “want to” safety focus.    Shmuel is an experienced instructor and speaker on behavior modification and safety development.   For the Last 20+ years, he has been a senior EMT & member of Hatzalah Volunteer Ambulance Corp. of New York City, the largest volunteer ambulance company in the world, with a call volume greater than 911 of Chicago.  In this capacity he was a “first responder” to ground zero on the 9/11 attack on the United States. Shmuel is a graduate of Northern Illinois University with a double major in business administration and biology.  He achieved his Master’s and Post Master’s while studying in NYC at MTJ-YSI.  

Becky Herrold, PHR/SHRM-CP

Becky has worked in the human resources/safety field for over 16 years.  She started her tenure ship at Swanson Health Products handling multiple roles including payroll, benefits, HR administration, and safety for nearly 10 years and obtained her PHR certification.  She then moved on to TEAM Industries and took on the role of safety coordinator.  During that time she obtained her OSHA 30 hour certification along with providing and promoting behavioral safety techniques to employees.  She is currently the safety manager at McNeilus Steel, Inc. in Fargo.   With the promotion of proactive safety reporting and implementation of new safety management systems, Becky has saved McNeilus Steel over $100,000 in potential claims and reserves and reduced the incidence rate by over one-half in past four years. 

Andrea Lankford

Andrea Lankford is currently the Sr. Safety Compliance manager for Reliance Steel & Aluminum Co. in the Los Angeles, CA headquarters for the last five years.  Prior to her move to corporate Andrea was the global director of safety for Reliance Steel & Aluminum Co. subsidiary Continental Alloys & Service in Spring, TX for 5 years managing the safety at all 9 locations domestically and internationally (Malaysia, Singapore, Dubai & Scotland.)  Before Reliance Steel & Aluminum Co. Andrea worked for an oil rig work over company where her passion and love for safety was truly ignited by building and implementing a program from the ground up.  Andrea’s specialty is working with compliant companies to help them take the leap to becoming truly safe companies, creating customized processes and programs that not only encourage compliance but build a culture of peer to peer safety with management involvement.

Ed Neimeir

Ed Neimeir is director of Operational Excellence at Olympic Steel’s corporate office.  He has been with Olympic Steel for 17 years and spent 11 years in the metal fastener industry.  He is responsible for directing safety, quality, environment and continual improvement programs at Olympic Stee.  Ed earned a Bacheleor’s of Science in mechanical engineering from Alfred University, and a Master’s of Science in engineering management from the University of Alabama.

Eric Worley, CSP

Eric Worley is a safety professional with 15 years experience in the field of safety. He began his career in the automobile manufacturing industry and has been the corporate safety manager for O’Neal Steel, Inc. since 2010.  Eric obtained his certified safety professional (CSP) designation in 2008 and is a member of the MSCI Safety Council.

Teg Matthews

Teg Matthews, director of sales, DEKRA Insight,  oversees business development strategies, disciplines, and processes for DEKRA Insight’s Asia-Pacific operations, producing measurable business results for both DEKRA Insight and its clients. 

Teg has years of experience working with various industries to execute and expand delivery projects for optimum results. His extensive experience in project management coupled with a background in cross-functional team leadership helps global clients define a change strategy to reach their safety goals. He works with company leaders to help them accurately assess, appraise, and analyze their current situations, then design and implement the changes and solutions that will lead them to optimized safety performance. Recognized as a leader in his field, Teg is frequently asked to speak at both regional and international conferences.

Prior to DEKRA Insight, Teg led a number of companies that provide effective human resource consultancy, solutions, and training. He has worked extensively within European as well as global transport and logistics organizations, and also led several businesses through the adoption, application, and accreditation of IIP, ISO 9000, ISO 18001, and ISO 14001 standards.

Teg earned his MBA from the University of Glamorgan Business School. He also holds a bachelor’s degree in applied biological science, and is accredited by the National Examination Board in Occupational Safety and Health (NEBOSH).

Steve Yates

As the founder and president of Optimum Safety Management, Steve brings extensive leadership experience in partnering with local, regional, and national firms to design and implement effective, sustainable safety management systems.

With vast experience in manufacturing operations and construction technology, Steve uses his background in mechanical engineering to see the entire picture of safety before helping Optimum Safety Management clients to recognize the true Return on Safety™¸ the significant gains in engagement, productivity and profitability that come with innovative, structured, and sustainable safety management systems.

An authorized OSHA outreach trainer, Certified Leadership Coach, Construction Health and Safety Technologist®, Steve also is a highly regarded speaker who has introduced attendees at local, regional, and national events to the big picture in safety, including recent speaking engagements at the Illinois Chamber of Commerce, Finishing Contractors Association, Metals Service Center Institute, Illinois Safety Council, Valley Industrial Association, Northwest Builders Association and OSHA Conferences.





Registration Cancellation Policies
A full refund will be issued for cancellations received in writing by MSCI by 5:00 pm Monday, August 14, 2017; cancellations received in writing by MSCI by 5:00 pm before Wednesday, September 6, 2017 will receive a refund of 50% of registration fees paid. No shows and cancellations received after that time will not be eligible for refunds. Substitutions may be made at any time. Written cancellations or substitutions will be accepted by the MSCI Member Services Department.

Entertainment Policy
Entertainment and/or company meetings should never be scheduled at the same time as official MSCI business or a social event. This includes breakfast sessions, business sessions, and evening group functions. MSCI recommends that company entertainment be planned prior to the opening or following the conclusion of the meeting. Those companies wishing to plan any entertainment are asked to advise MSCI.

Press and Sponsorship Policies
No MSCI policy is intended to prevent accredited members of the press from attending MSCI events. Members of the press are defined as employees of publications that are subject to a circulation audit by a reputable third party (i.e., BPA). Each press outlet will receive one complimentary press registration.

Any attribution from a formal presentation or informal conversation outside of a formal conference session requires the permission of any speaker and MSCI before their comments or information from their presentation may be printed, distributed or published. Recording of programs, materials and/or presentations (e.g., audio taping and/or videotaping) is prohibited. MSCI has the right to deny attendance to individuals or publications not abiding by this policy.
