Global Economic Analysis and News of Note: Asian Manufacturing Sectors Improve

  • Reports released Monday indicated that the manufacturing sectors in various Asian countries strengthened last month. The Caixin’s purchasing managers index (PMI) for China rose to 50.1 in September from 50.0 in August due to increases in the number of new orders and in production. The Nikkei PMI for Japan rose to 50.4 from 49.5. New export orders in Japan were at their highest level in eight months. South Korea’s PMI fell to a 14-month low due to the fact that production fell at its fastest rate since August 2015. Taiwan’s index rose to 52.2 last month from 51.8 in August because of increases in new orders and new export orders. Vietnam’s index rose to 52.9 from 52.2.
