Judge Says Trump Administration Must Update Keystone Environmental Review

A federal judge in Montana issued a ruling last week that said the Trump administration must update the environmental review of the Keystone XL Pipeline before TransCanada, which owns the pipeline, can engage “in any activity in furtherance of the construction or operation of [the pipeline] and associated facilities.” Specifically, the judge wants a more robust examination of how the pipeline will impact climate change, cultural resources, and endangered species.

The pipeline has been in development for more than 10 year. The U.S. State Department, under President Barack Obama, issued its final environmental review of the project in 2014. The review found the pipeline would have little impact on endangered species and would have limited impact on water quality.

The Metals Service Center Institute has supported development of the Keystone pipeline.
