CHICAGO, Illinois, October 8, 2002 – Members of the Metals Service Center Institute (MSCI) and National Association of Aluminum Distributors (NAAD) have voted in favor of a merger of NAAD into MSCI.  MSCI members, in a special meeting, voted 112-2 in favor of the merger, while a substantial majority of NAAD members voted for the combination.

Both organizations will now consummate the merger as soon as possible and file their merger documents with the state of New York and the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania.

MSCI has already created an Aluminum Products Division, and local chapters of MSCI and NAAD are working to combine their activities.

“This is a historic day for both organizations and their members,” said Maurice S. “Sandy” Nelson, chairman of MSCI and president and chief executive officer of Earle M. Jorgensen Company of Brea,California. “It makes organizational and economic sense for both groups and for all of our members.”

“We first began talking about a merger early this year because it is such a logical step for us to take,” said Stephen E. Makarewicz, president of Ryerson Tull’s South Region and president of NAAD.  “Today marks a milestone in the history of our organization.   I look forward to playing a leadership role within the MSCI and its Aluminum Products Division.  I am confident that the value-added services MSCI brings to our members are greater today than ever.”

M. Robert Weidner, III, president of MSCI, said the current NAAD leadership will fundamentally continue as the leadership of the Aluminum Products Division, with a number of representatives taking positions on the MSCI national Board of Directors.

“The addition of NAAD to MSCI brings us an important step closer to realizing our long-term strategic goal of becoming the premier metals trade association as judged by our members,” said Weidner. “We welcome NAAD members who are new to MSCI and look forward to a long, productive and mutually beneficial relationship.”

Julie S. Thane, a former executive vice president of NAAD, was previously named director of MSCI’s Aluminum Products Division.  NAAD’s 52nd and final annual meeting is scheduled for November 13-16 inScottsdale, Arizona.

Founded in 1907, the Metals Service Center Institute has about 300 service center members operating from about 1,000 locations in the U.S. and Canada, as well approximately 80 associate members. MSCI customers include about 300,000 manufacturers and fabricators. Metals service centers distribute metals and provide first-stage fabrication services.
