MSCI CONTINUES TO BUILD ON SUCCESSES:
Reports Double-Digit Growth in 2012
Phoenix, Ariz. – Nov. 5, 2012 –– The Metals Service Center Institute (MSCI) reported double-digit membership growth for 2012 to its board of directors at their meeting this past weekend. This year the 103-year old Rolling Meadows based organization welcomed more than 40 companies. Their member roster of over 400 companies reads as a “who’s who” in the metals industry including metal service centers, producing mills and companies who provide products or services to the metals supply chain.
“We are pleased to see another year of significant membership growth, across all categories. Member companies and participants are finding and sharing the value that they experience through MSCI with others in the industry,” explained Chairman of MSCI’s Board of Directors Michael H. Hoffman. “This is the third year in a row that MSCI has experienced significant growth, despite uncertainty in our economy. Sixty percent of our members today were not part of our organization in 2001.”
As part of MSCI’s advocacy efforts on behalf of members, a series of 11 Manufacturing Summits were held across the country to discuss issues of critical importance to the industry and educate candidates. More than 3,000 members and guests, plus 30 political incumbents and candidates, attended to hear panelists discuss critical manufacturing issues.
M. Robert Weidner, III, president and CEO of MSCI, is cautiously optimistic about continued growth for the organization and the US economy in 2013. “I am looking forward to the upcoming election and that going forward our leadership understands the need for collaboration and action on both short and long-term issues important to manufacturing for the economy to improve.”
Weidner also stressed that membership growth for the organization is an ongoing process, as is evolving to meet the growing needs of its members. “In September we launched a new dynamic website that better represents MSCI and its offerings, promoting increased communication with our chapters. Our multi-tiered education program has also been revised and enhanced, and the foundation put in place for products and services to support the new Copper & Brass product division. In addition, our first annual Safety Conference debuted this year with one-fifth of member companies represented.”
The scholarship program supported by MSCI national and implemented through its chapters experienced growth as well, with more than 250 scholarships being awarded in 2012. In total since the program began in 2004, the program has nearly 1300 scholarships totaling over $2.5 million in support to children of employees at MSCI member companies.
Founded in 1909, the Metals Service Center Institute, based in Rolling Meadows, Ill., has over 400 members operating from more than 1,500 locations in the United States, Canada, Mexico and throughout the world. Together MSCI members constitute the largest single group of metals purchasers in North America, amounting each year to more than 55 million tons of steel, aluminum and other metals, with about 300,000 manufacturers and fabricators as customers. MSCI's membership also includes almost all ferrous and non-ferrous industrial metals producers in North America. Service centers inventory, process and distribute metals to manufacturing intermediaries and original equipment manufacturers.
MSCI conducts eight national level conferences for members annually along with networking events that are held across the 30+ chapters and offer access to educational programs for all levels of employees from entry-level to executive.
