National Carbon Tax Coming To Canada
As Reuters reported last Monday, Canadian Environment Minister Catherine McKenna has announced that “Canada will impose a carbon price on provinces that do not adequately regulate emissions by themselves.” McKenna said the plan will be put into place next month, but did not offer details about penalties.
According to Reuters, McKenna did indicate the program will only be a “backstop” for provinces that do not comply with emissions reduction targets. At least four Canadian provinces—British Columbia, Alberta, Ontario and Quebec—already either tax carbon or have a cap and trade program in place.
