October Growth Slows

Except for a small decline in Canadian steel shipments, the growth in metals shipments was positive in October but roughly half the rate of September. Inventory positions improved across the board.

 

U.S. Service Center Activity

In October 2014, U.S. service center steel shipments increased by 3.2% from October 2013. Steel product inventories increased 15.5% from October a year ago. At the current shipping rate, this represents 2.3 months of supply in inventory.

In October, U.S. service center shipments of aluminum products increased by 8.6% from the same month in 2013. Inventories of aluminum products increased 9.3% from October a year ago. At the current shipping rate, this represents 2.7 months of supply in inventory.

 

Canadian Service Center Activity

In October 2014, service center shipments of steel products decreased by 2.8% from October 2013.  Steel product inventories increased 24.0% from October a year. At the current shipping rate, this represents 3.0 months of supply in inventory.

Canadian service center aluminum shipments in October increased 8.5% from the same month in 2013. Inventories of aluminum products increased 17.4% from October a year ago. At the current shipping rate, this represents 2.7 months of supply in inventory.
