Carbon Bars:

  • Begin as a billet and are reduced to finished size by hot rolling or forging.
  • Are produced as:
    • round, square or hex
    • flats
    • bar size shapes
  • Are measured using the RA scale, with a lower number indicating a smoother finish.
  •  Include the following hot rolled common grades:
    • 1018
    • 1117
    • 11L17
    • 1030
    • 1045
    • 1141
    • 11L41
    • 1144
  • Include the following cold rolled common grades:
    • 1018
    • 1045
    • 1095
    • 1117
    • 11L17
    • 1141
    • 11L41
    • 1144
    • 1144 to ASTM A-311 Class B
    • 1144 to ASTM A-311 Class C
    • 1215
    • 12L14
    • 12L14X
  • That are hot rolled will have a surface finish around 250 RA. Cold drawing or turning and polishing improves the surface finish to about 50 RA. Grinding and polishing provides and extremely smooth surface of about 29 RA.
