Steel Declines Slightly in U.S. as Canadian Shipments Tumble Further

ROLLING MEADOWS, Ill

MSCI Metals Activity for May 2025 shows a modest decline in U.S. service center steel shipments, while aluminum continued to trend downward. Compared to May 2024, steel shipments in the U.S. dipped 0.6%, and aluminum shipments fell 7.9%, both seasonally adjusted. In Canada, the downturn deepened significantly, with steel shipments plunging 18.6% and aluminum shipments falling 20.5% year-over-year. These figures continue a multi-month trend of notable contraction in Canadian service center activity.

U.S. Service Center Activity

U.S. service center steel shipments in May 2025 were -0.6% (seasonally adjusted) from May 2024. Shipments of aluminum products were -7.9% (seasonally adjusted) from the same month in 2024.

Canadian Service Center Activity

Canadian service center steel shipments in May 2025 were -18.6% (seasonally adjusted) from May 2024. Shipments of aluminum products were -20.5% (seasonally adjusted) from the same month in 2024.
