What’s The Latest On U.S.-China Trade Talks?

U.S. trade officials are in Beijing this week for trade talks. Deputy U.S. Trade Representative Jeffrey Gerrish is leading the delegation for the talks, which started on Jan. 7 and will continue for another day. Prior to the meetings, representatives from the two countries said they would discuss how to implement the deal reached by President Donald Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping last month in Argentina. The talks reportedly were to be divided into groups dealing with non-tariff measures, including intellectual property and agriculture and industrial purchases, and tariffs.

Gregg Doud, USTR agricultural negotiator; David Malpass, Treasury undersecretary for international affairs; Gil Kaplan, undersecretary of Commerce for international trade; Ted McKinney, undersecretary of Agriculture for trade and foreign agricultural affairs; and Merry Lin, director for global and Asia economics at the National Security Council also are in Beijing for the meetings.

U.S. Trade Representative Robert Lighthizer is expected to meet with Chinese Vice Premier Liu He, Xi’s top economic adviser, sometime later this month. Over the weekend it also was reported that President Trump plans to meet with China’s Vice-President Wang Qishan at the World Economic Forum’s annual meeting, also later this month.
