Rolling Meadows, Ill., Sept. 30, 2019—At its annual Safety Conference last week, the Metals Service Center Institute awarded its first ever Safety Innovation and Improvement Award. Recipients were ArcelorMittal Dofasco, headquartered in Hamilton, Canada; Plateplus, Inc. headquartered in The Woodlands, Texas; and United Scrap Metal, headquartered in Cicero, Ill.

The award recognizes members of the MSCI community that seek new and innovative approaches in their efforts to ensure that every metals industry employee arrives home from work exactly as they left. The judges considered several factors to determine the 2019 award winners, including innovation and uniqueness in approach; whether the company’s innovation was employee- or management-driven; evidence of employee training in sustaining benefits; and the degree to which the company’s innovation or improvement was integrated into the whole organization through a “culture based” approach.

“Employees are an organization’s most important asset and ultimately are their only source of competitive advantage,” said MSCI President and CEO M. Robert Weidner, III. “Creating a culture of safety is integral to our industry’s efforts to recruit and retain workers. These three companies have shown their commitment to a culture-based approach to safety that should be the gold standard for our member community, and for the entire metals industry. We are proud to honor ArcelorMittal Dofasco, Plateplus and United Scrap Metal with our inaugural Safety Innovation and Improvement Award.”

Going forward, MSCI annually will recognize three members of the association’s community – one mill, one service center and one affiliate member – that have made significant strides to drive safety improvement within their organizations.
