California Approves Ambitious New Goals For Wind Energy

As The Hill reported last week, the California Energy Commission has approved an ambitious plan to expand wind energy production in the state. Specifically, the targets call for the deployment of three gigawatts to five gigawatts of offshore wind by 2030 and 25 gigawatts by 2045. The new targets are thought to be the most ambitious by a U.S. state so far.

Officials believe, when implemented, the new plan could power the equivalent of 3.75 million homes initially and 25 million by the middle of this century. The commission developed the targets in coordination with federal, state, and local stakeholders.

As a next step, the commission will study the economic benefits of offshore wind and creating a roadmap to develop a permitting process for offshore facilities. If possible, industrial metals companies that are concerned about this proposal or who support it should explain how this plan will impact operations.

The commission must submit the entire plan to the legislature by June 2023. Click here to find more information from the California Energy Regulatory Commission.
