Rolling Meadows, Ill., May 25, 2022—The Metals Service Center Institute (MSCI), a 113-year-old association that serves the entire industrial metals supply chain, concluded its Annual Meeting of Members today. President and CEO Bob Weidner gave a “State of the Industry” address in which he provided an economic outlook for the industry and an update on how the association is fulfilling its mission to strengthen and support the industrial metals community.
“The industrial metals sector faced serious disruption before COVID-19. Unfair trade competition and consolidation meant our industry looked a lot different than it did even a generation ago,” said Weidner. “The pandemic only hastened the pace of change, but our association emerged stronger and with a better value proposition. By adding on-demand content on topics including COVID-19, safety, DEI, ESG, leadership, the economy, and much more, we’re providing the subject matter expertise companies need to address the global challenges they face. With MSCI’s industry intelligence and data products, formal education offerings, and virtual and in-person networking, we give every employee at our member companies —regardless of title and tenure in the industry — the chance to learn, grow, and connect.”
Olympic Steel CEO and MSCI Board Chair Rick Marabito, who is in the second year of a two-year term leading MSCI’s board, also addressed the gathering. Marabito welcomed Vanessa L. Whiting, an independent director on the Olympic Steel Board of Directors. The two discussed human capital struggles and steps companies can take to create more inclusive workplaces.
“Amid supply chain stress and constant global upheaval, the greatest challenge facing our industry is still talent. Companies need the tools to attract, retain, engage and advance people,” said Marabito. “Whether for education, thought leadership, data analytics, the online Community Forum or chapter events, MSCI is a place where I know I can send our employees to get information and actionable intelligence that will help them advance in their careers and, ultimately, benefit our company. An engaged workforce, where everyone feels they are valued and respected, is a company’s greatest asset. MSCI helps us in addressing our industry’s greatest challenge, human capital management.”
As part of the Annual Meeting of Members, MSCI awarded its Jack Malec Chapter Leadership Award to Klein Steel President Mike Young. MSCI’s Lifetime Achievement Award went to Goldin Metals founder Jack Goldin and John T. Russel and Hugh Russel, the founders of Russel Metals. Michael F. Petersen of Petersen Aluminum will receive the Lifetime Achievement Award at MSCI’s Aluminum Products Division Conference in November 2022.
