Canada, India, South Korea All Take On Chinese Trade

What happens abroad impacts MSCI members in North America. Here is the latest economic, trade, and other policy news of note for the last week:

  • The Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA) has initiated an investigation to determine whether certain carbon and alloy steel wire originating in. or exported from. China, India, Italy, Malaysia, Portugal, Spain, Taiwan, Thailand, Turkey, and Vietnam is being sold at unfair prices in Canada. As a next step, the Canadian International Trade Tribunal (CITT) will begin a preliminary inquiry to determine whether the imports are harming Canadian producers and will issue a decision by June 20, 2025. Concurrently, the CBSA will investigate whether the imports are being sold in Canada at unfair prices. It will make a preliminary decision by July 21, 2025. The total Canadian market for certain carbon and alloy steel wire is estimated to be approximately $463 million annually.
  • The South Korean Ministry of Economy and Finance will impose preliminary anti-dumping (AD) duties on steel plates from China. The duties range from 27.91 percent to 38.02 percent for hot-rolled carbon or other alloy steel plate and will be valid for four months until August 23, 2025. Read more at this link.
  • The government of India has imposed provisional safeguard duties of 12 percent on certain steel imports from China. The penalty went into effect on April 21, 2025 and will be effective for 200 days. It will apply to any imports below $675 per ton. Read more at this link.
