Canada And Mexico Announce New Economic Security Plan
Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum and Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney announced the launch of a new Comprehensive Strategic Partnership that is aimed at deepening ties between the two countries when it comes to the shared goals of advancing prosperity, security, inclusion, and sustainability.
The partnership will be guided by the Canada-Mexico Action Plan, which outlines key areas of cooperation, including:
- Prioritizing the development of long-term infrastructure, including ports and energy corridors;
- Creating a new bilateral security dialog to combat transnational organized crime; and
- Building more opportunities for trade and investment in sectors such as energy, critical minerals, and agriculture.
“Canada and Mexico are entering a new era of cooperation. We are elevating our partnerships in trade, investment, energy, and security to create more opportunity for Canadian workers, expanded markets for Canadian businesses, and more certainty for Canadian investors,” said Prime Minister Carney. To support the new partnership, Prime Minister Carney announced $9.9 million in new funding, including $5.5 million for a United Nations-led project to support the integration of migrants and displaced people in Mexico and $4.4 million through the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime and the Royal Canadian Mounted Police to bolster Mexico’s efforts to combat the trafficking of fentanyl and other synthetic opioids.
Prime Minister Carney also announced a forthcoming trade mission to Mexico to be led by Minister Dominic LeBlanc.
