Global News Of Note: China And Canada Meet To Discuss Trade
What happens abroad impacts MSCI members in North America. Here is the latest economic, trade, and other policy news of note for the last week:
- As the BBC reported, Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney is in China this week, “marking the first trip by a Canadian prime minister to China in nearly a decade.” The prime minister landed in Beijing on Jan. 13 and will stay until Jan. 17. Policy items on the agenda include trade, energy, agriculture, and international security. Prime Minister Carney was formally invited to China after meeting President Xi Jinping in South Korea in October.
- Prime Minister Carney’s trip to China came after the Chinese government announced that it will continue to regulate crude steel output and prohibit the addition of new capacity from 2026 to 2030. China started capping output in 2021. In the first 11 months of 2025, the country’s crude steel output fell four percent from the same period in 2024, which meant annual total output for 2025 was on track to drop below one billion tons for the first time in six years. - The government of India has imposed tariffs on some steel products from several countries, including China, Nepal, and Vietnam. The tariffs will total 12 percent in the first year, 11.5 percent in the second year, and 11 percent in the third year after implementation. The levies will not apply to specialty steel products such as stainless steel. Reuters has more information.
