Canada’s New Cabinet Will Focus On Tariffs, Economy

In mid-May, Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney unveiled his cabinet, promising “decisive action” to improve the country’s economy and to address tariffs recently imposed by the United States.

The cabinet includes 28 ministers, 24 of whom are new to their posts. As BBC noted, veteran member of parliament (MP) Dominic LeBlanc is charged with overseeing efforts related to Canada-U.S. trade and to breaking down trade barriers between Canada’s provinces. Toronto-area MP Maninder Sidhu will serve as minister of international trade, meanwhile, while Anita Anand will serve as foreign minister. Four cabinet members are not new, including Chrystia Freeland, who remains in place as minister of transport, and François-Philippe Champagne, who has stayed on as minister of finance.

As CNN reported, a week after the cabinet announcement, Prime Minister Carney issued a letter that outlined his cabinet’s seven top priorities. They are:

  • Establishing a new economic and security relationship with the United States and strengthening collaboration with reliable trading partners and allies around the world.
  • Building one Canadian economy by removing barriers to interprovincial trade and expediting nation-building projects that will connect and transform the country.
  • Bringing down costs for Canadians and helping them to get ahead.
  • Making housing more affordable by unleashing the power of public-private cooperation, catalyzing a modern housing industry, and creating new careers in the skilled trades.
  • Protecting Canadian sovereignty and keeping Canadians safe by strengthening the Canadian Armed Forces, securing borders, and reinforcing law enforcement.
  • Attracting the best talent in the world while returning overall immigration rates to sustainable levels.
  • Spending less on government operations so Canadians can invest more in the people and businesses that will build the strongest economy in the G7.
