Global News Of Note: Canada Goes After Turkish Rebar

What happens abroad impacts MSCI members in North America. Here is the latest economic, trade, and other policy news of note for the last week:

  • Canada’s Border Services Agency (CBSA) has applied retroactive duties on concrete reinforcing bars (rebars) from Turkey for the period from July 2021 to August 2022. The Canadian Steel Producers Association praised the move. Read more here.
  • According to Reuters, finished steel imports into India from China reached a four-year high during the first seven months of the fiscal year that began in April. China was the top exporter of finished steel to India during that time period, shipping in 1.1 million metric tons of the product, up 47.3 percent year-over-year.
  • The net import volume of primary aluminum in China in October was 216,000 tons, an increase of 11.5 percent from September and of 223.4 percent from October 2022. The total net import volume of primary aluminum from January to October was 1.059 million tons, an increase of 347 percent from the year before. China’s import volume of primary aluminum was 217,000 tons, an increase of 7.9 percent for the month and a 221.1 percent increase for the year. Read more here.
