Global News Of Note: USMCA Review May Take Longer Than Expected

What happens abroad impacts MSCI members in North America. Here is the latest economic, trade, and other policy news of note for the last week:

  • As Mexico Business News reported, U.S. government officials continue to temper expectations regarding negotiations surrounding the United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA). Specifically, last week U.S. Trade Representative Jamieson Greer projected negotiations over the six-year review of the USMCA will extend beyond the July 1, 2026 deadline. At an event sponsored by the Hudson Institute, Ambassador Greer noted that President Donald Trump “has made clear that he is dissatisfied with many of the outcomes of the USMCA,” including increased U.S. imports of vehicles, steel, and aluminum from Mexico.
  • Last week, the U.S. International Trade Commission (ITC) determined that U.S. industry is materially injured by imports of temporary steel fencing from China that are sold in the United States at less than fair value and are subsidized by the government of China. As a result of the ITC’s affirmative determinations, The U.S. Department of Commerce will issue an antidumping duty order and a countervailing duty order on imports of this product from China.
