North American Metals Shipments End Year on Uneven Footing

ROLLING MEADOWS, Ill

MSCI metals activity for December 2025 reflects mixed performance across North American service centers, with aluminum showing relative strength in the U.S. while steel shipments remained slightly lower year-over-year. U.S. service center steel shipments declined 1.5% compared to December 2024 on a seasonally adjusted basis, while aluminum shipments increased 4.3%. In Canada, steel shipments edged down 0.4%, and aluminum shipments fell 3.3% from the same month last year. Overall, the data point to uneven demand conditions as the year closed, with aluminum outperforming steel in the U.S. market.

U.S. Service Center Activity

U.S. service center steel shipments in December 2025 were -1.5% (seasonally adjusted) from December 2024. Shipments of aluminum products were +4.3% (seasonally adjusted) from the same month in 2024.

Canadian Service Center Activity

Canadian service center steel shipments in December 2025 were -0.4% (seasonally adjusted) from December 2024. Shipments of aluminum products were -3.3% (seasonally adjusted) from the same month in 2024.
