Trump: No Section 232 Tariffs For Brazil

Three weeks ago, Connecting the Dots reported that President Donald Trump had announced a plan to reimpose Section 232 steel and aluminum imports from Brazil and Argentina.

The White House never followed up on that announcement with a formal proclamation and, after a phone call last week with Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro, President Trump reportedly “has changed his mind” and will not move forward with imposing the levies on Brazil. (There is no word on whether the president’s change of heart applies to his promise to re-impose Section 232 steel and aluminum tariffs on products from Argentina.)

President Trump had said he wanted to reimpose the Section 232 tariffs because he believes Brazil and Argentina are manipulating their currency. Stay tuned to Connecting the Dots as more information on this story develops. Visit MSCI’s advocacy page to review our stance on the Section 232 tariffs.
